Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment
HIRA Training Course
This practical training course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively identify workplace hazards and conduct risk assessments. Through a combination of lectures, workshops, and real-world case studies, participants will learn proven methodologies for hazard identification, risk evaluation, and implementing appropriate control measures using the hierarchy of controls.
Course Highlights
Comprehensive Hazard Identification
Master systematic approaches to identifying workplace hazards across all operational areas, activities, and processes.
Practical Risk Assessment
Learn to assess and evaluate OH&S risks using proven methodologies including risk matrices, likelihood and severity scoring, and consequence analysis.
Hierarchy of Controls
Understand and apply the hierarchy of controls framework to eliminate or minimise workplace risks through practical examples and case studies.
Hands-On Workplace Application
Gain practical experience through workshops and exercises that simulate real workplace scenarios and risk assessment activities.

Hazard Identification Techniques
Systematic approaches to identifying hazards including workplace inspections, job safety analysis, process mapping, incident analysis, and worker consultation methods.
Risk Assessment Methodologies
Understanding risk concepts (likelihood, severity, consequence), applying risk matrices and scoring systems, qualitative and semi-quantitative risk assessment techniques, and determining risk levels and acceptability.
Hierarchy of Controls
Comprehensive review of the hierarchy of controls framework: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Developing effective control measures and implementation strategies.
Practical Workshops & Application
Hands-on exercises conducting HIRA for workplace scenarios, documenting risk assessments, prioritising and managing residual risks, monitoring and reviewing control effectiveness, and continuous improvement of HIRA processes.
Assessment & Certification
Practical Assessment
Participants will complete practical workshop exercises throughout the course, including conducting hazard identification and risk assessment for workplace scenarios. Active participation and completion of workshop activities is required.
Certificate of Completion
Delegates successfully completing the course and practical exercises will receive a Certificate of Completion confirming their participation in the Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) training programme.
